Why do I need a chartered professional fire engineer?
Most customers seek a fire engineer on advice from the relevant Building Consent Authority (Council). For fire engineering based on the NZ Building Code Acceptable Solutions you don’t necessarily need a fire engineer. These designs are often completed by an experienced and competent technician, builder or architect. However you might anticipate that designs by people with lesser qualification and demonstrated competency will likely attract greater scrutiny.
Will there be any compliance problems with my application for building consent?
The more complex the fire engineering challenge or solution the greater the risk of compliance issues.
There are 67 Building Consent Authorities (BCA’s) in NZ with varying degrees of knowledge, qualification and experience in fire engineering. Even within a BCA there can be different interpretations of the Building Act, Regulations, and Compliance Documents.
In the unlikely event that compliance issues arise these should be minor and addressed quickly through discussion with the BCA or Requests for Further Information (RFI).
With more advanced design methodologies additional compliance surety can be provided through a Fire Engineering Brief (FEB) process, peer review, or statutory advice.
Will FireNZE need to do a site visit?
Not always but this depends on your project. Site visits will likely be required for risk assessment and loss investigation. They are usually recommended for projects involving existing buildings.
Where did the name FireNZE originate?
Many years ago while traveling to in Italy I saw a signpost to Florence and thought ‘ why that’s Fire New Zealand Engineering’. Firenze is pronounced fuh.renz.a in Italian. This was a poor choice of trading name as a web search directs to Italy, and most folk pronounce it as fire N Z E. But we like it.
Why can’t I contact FireNZE by telephone?
Your call is important. You can always contact us by phone but we can’t always pick up due to other commitments. Please leave a message with your name and contact details or alternatively send an email. We will always reply, usually on the same day. Please contact us.
Why did I struggle to find FireNZE?
The good news is that you did find us. FireNZE chooses to have a low profile. We do not actively advertise or seek tenders. Most of our business comes from referrals or returning customers. Limiting our workload in this way enables us to be responsive to customers’ needs, pursue other interests, and maintain work-lifestyle balance.
